TIPS FOR BREEDING WITH SHIPPED SEMEN

1.   The mare should be palpated on her 1st or early on her 2nd day of heat. She will probably not be ready to breed at this time but you will know exactly where she is at.

2.   A busy stallion is only bred every other day. Call the stallion manager and let him know your mare is in heat and find out if the stallion is on a schedule. This may limit the days you can receive semen.

3.   Continue to have your veterinarian monitor your mare either daily or no later than every other day.

4.   With the information your veterinarian gets from palpating your mare and knowing the stallion’s schedule, order semen so that you breed your mare within 24 hours of ovulation and within 48 hours post-semen collection.

5.  Remember we ship semen Every other day, and YOU MUST REQUEST SHIPMENT BY NOON (Central Time) ON THE DAY BEFORE SHIPPING DAY. Cancellations must be received before Noon (Central Time) on shipping day. We need time to coordinate the collection with the stallion’s need to breed mares at the farm. We do our best to accommodate requests called in after 12:00 p.m. the day before, but can make no promises.

6.   Mares bred with the cooled transported semen should be given HCG to facilitate the prediction of ovulation. HCG is a natural product which causes the mare to ovulate 36 to 48 hours post injection if she is not on her 2nd or greater day of heat and has a 35mm follicle at the time of injection. The cost of HCG is far less than a second semen shipment. Only give one HCG injection per cycle.  Mares can be given HCG on two consecutive cycles. Optimally, you should give your mare a HCG injection the day before you breed her so that she ovulates 12 to 36 hours post breeding. One disadvantage to this is if you give your mare the injection before you breed her she is definitely going to ovulate but not definitely going to get bred if there are problems with collecting the stallion or problems with delivering the semen. Some people prefer to give the injection when they breed the mare to ensure she is bred before she ovulates, but, this means the mare ovulates 60 to 72 hours post semen collection. Some stallions have this longevity, some do not. Generally, Federal Express is very dependable, but the semen will usually arrive within 12 hours of its planned arrival time.

7.  It is important that mare owners realize that we cannot guarantee delivery. Federal Express will guarantee their delivery time (by 10:30 a.m. weekdays, Saturdays vary by region) by refunding the delivery price to us. But they will NOT reimburse anyone for any cost (veterinary, board, transported semen) anything incurred if the mare ovulates before she is bred because delivery was late and therefore she did not get in foal. The airlines do not guarantee delivery at all. Transported semen has lots of advantages, but it has its disadvantages as well. There will be problems arising because the mare is not on the farm that the stallion is at. Mare owners need to be ready to accept some responsibility for the decision they made not to send the mare to the stallion. We will do our best to keep all problems to a minimum, but nothing compares to the convenience and efficiency of having the mare with the stallion.

TIPS FOR HANDLING SHIPPED SEMEN

  1. Do not open container until you are ready to inseminate the mare.

  2. Remove semen from packaging and inseminate the mare immediately. Do not warm semen before inseminating.

  3. If you wish to evaluate the semen, keep a small sample in an incubator for 10-15 minutes before evaluation. Do not warm the sample in a water bath or microwave.  Your input as to semen quality is appreciated.

  4. Upon availability, two insemination doses will be provided in case your mare ovulates later than expected. Use one dose immediately. The second dose should be put in a refrigerator for use the following day. The refrigerator should be kept at 40°F (5°C).  The Equitainer will not keep the second dose cool enough once it has been opened.

  5. REMEMBER:  Rapid variation in temperature adversely affects semen quality. Please handle quickly and carefully.

  6. Put coolant cans, thermal cup, and semen cup back into the Equitainer and ship it back to us without delay.

  7. NOTICE: In the Equitainer packaging there are important breeding forms. Please make sure that you fill them out correctly and mail them to the proper party as SOON AS POSSIBLE.
